Enjoy That Holiday Food, Too!
No matter how many holiday seasons pass, each one seems to start earlier, than the last. September which has always meant the beginning of autumn, the football season, and cool days, now means the first appearance of Santa Claus, in many stores and commercials.
And most of us face the probem of the expanding waistline as we make our way through all of our holiday celebrations. And, because the season seems to start so early, nowadays, those pounds we add begin to pile up sooner and sooner, every year. And our children are just as vulnerable to holiday weight gain, as we are, despite our best efforts to pay attention to what they eat.
It’s not realistic to expect to have the time or the inclination to begin a whole new, exercise-filled way of life, as Christmas approaches. Most of us just don’t have the time. But there are some things that families can do together that can help keep a few extra pounds off.
Weekends can be great times for parents to take their kids on morning walks. An early, brisk, half-hour walk can charge the metabolic batteries for the whole day, so that the body burns calories more efficiently. A good walk on the morning of a party, where there will be great food, can stave off a tiny bit of weight gain.
Choosing stairs over elevators or escalators is a cheap, quick way of burning calories. Many corporate and company Christmas parties are in office buildings, where the choice is available. Ascending and descending, using stairs, will burn a lot more calories than standing in an elevator.
Few people realize the weight-loss advantages of sleep. Though the holiday season is such a busy time, it’s important to maintain proper sleep habits to keep the body’s efficiency operating at peak levels.
Avoiding wonderful food during the holidays is like trying to avoid Christams carols-who wants to do that? The best thing that families can do to avoid buying larger clothes in January is to look for as many opportunities as possible to burn a few extra calories, every day.
